What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation — also known as augmentation mammoplasty — is a surgical procedure that uses implants or, in some cases, fat transfer to increase the size, improve the shape, and enhance the overall projection of the breasts. It remains one of the top five cosmetic surgeries performed globally each year.
Many factors can influence breast size and shape over the course of a woman's life. Weight fluctuations, the natural aging process, genetic predisposition, pregnancy and breastfeeding, hormonal changes, and the unavoidable effects of gravity can all leave patients feeling that their breasts no longer reflect how they see themselves. Breast augmentation addresses these concerns by placing a carefully chosen implant to create a fuller, more proportionate contour.
Note: It is important to understand that breast augmentation primarily adds volume and improves shape. If you have significant breast sagging (ptosis), your surgeon may recommend combining the augmentation with a breast lift to achieve the best possible result.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for breast augmentation share several characteristics:
Physical health
You are in good overall health without active infections or uncontrolled chronic conditions.
Breast development
Your breasts are fully developed (typically age 18+ for saline, 22+ for silicone).
Realistic expectations
You understand that augmentation enhances your figure but does not achieve 'perfection'.
Non-smoker
Smoking impairs healing. Surgeons require patients to stop smoking at least two weeks before and after.
Stable weight
Significant weight changes after surgery can alter your results.
Emotional readiness
The decision is your own and not driven by external pressure.
During your free consultation, the surgical team will review your medical history and determine whether breast augmentation alone or a combined procedure — such as a mommy makeover — is the right approach.
Types of Breast Implants
Choosing the right implant is one of the most important decisions you will make. Your surgeon will guide you through the options based on your anatomy, lifestyle, and desired outcome.
Silicone Gel Implants
Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. They are the most popular choice among patients in Thailand and worldwide.
- Most natural look and feel
- Less prone to visible rippling
- "Gummy bear" variants maintain shape even if shell is compromised
Saline Implants
Consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater solution. They are inserted empty and filled once in place, which allows for a slightly smaller incision.
- Smaller surgical incision
- Harmlessly absorbed by body if ruptured
- Ruptures are immediately visible

Implant Size
Implants are measured in cubic centimetres (cc) rather than cup sizes. During your consultation, surgeons use sizers or 3D imaging to help you visualise different volumes. Common volumes range from 150 cc to 800 cc, with most patients selecting between 250 cc and 450 cc.
How Breast Augmentation Is Performed
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes two to three hours. Most patients spend one night in the hospital for observation.
Incision Options
1. Inframammary
Under the breast. The most common approach. A short incision in the natural fold provides excellent control. The scar is well concealed within the crease.
2. Periareolar
Around the nipple. Follows the lower border of the areola. Hides the scar effectively but may carry a slightly higher risk of changes in nipple sensation.
3. Transaxillary
In the armpit. Leaves no scar on the breast itself. Often performed with endoscopic assistance for precision.
Implant Placement
Subglandular (Over the muscle)
Placed between breast tissue and pectoral muscle. Suitable for patients with adequate natural tissue coverage; often results in a shorter recovery.
Submuscular (Under the muscle)
Positioned beneath the pectoral muscle. Provides additional tissue coverage for a more natural look (especially for slimmer patients) and reduces capsular contracture risk.
Dual-plane
A hybrid approach: upper portion sits behind the muscle, lower portion covered only by breast tissue. Balances a natural upper slope with lower-pole fullness.
Preparing for Your Surgery
Thorough preparation helps ensure a smooth procedure and optimal recovery. Follow these guidelines in the weeks leading up to your surgery.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery is a gradual process. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the healing period is when they follow instructions closely.
First Week
- Gentle walking to promote circulation
- Bandages removed on day two
- Bruising/swelling peaks days 3-5
- Sleep on back, slightly elevated
Weeks Two to Four
- Numbness/tingling usually resolves
- No submerging incisions in water
- Light daily activities resume
- Wear sports bra 24/7 for 3-4 weeks
Weeks Four to Eight
- Return to moderate exercise
- Avoid heavy lifting for 6 weeks
- Scars begin to mature and fade
- Implants settle into final position
How Long to Stay in Thailand
We recommend staying for at least nine days after your procedure. This allows time for follow-up appointments, suture checks, and ensures you are recovering well before travelling home.
Risks and Complications
Breast augmentation has a strong safety profile, but potential risks exist. Your surgeon will discuss these in detail during consultation.
Choosing a board-certified surgeon at a JCI-accredited facility and following all pre- and post-operative instructions are the most effective ways to minimise these risks.
Breast Augmentation Cost in Thailand
Breast augmentation at Thailand's top hospitals costs 50–70% less than comparable procedures in the US, UK, or Australia — without any compromise in surgeon qualifications or implant quality. Prices include surgeon fees, anaesthesia, hospital stay (1 night), and implants.
