What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance, restore facial harmony, or correct structural problems that impair breathing. It can address a wide range of concerns, including:
- Nose size — reducing or augmenting overall volume.
- Nose width — narrowing a wide bridge or broad nasal base.
- Nasal profile — smoothing bumps, humps, or depressions.
- Tip shape — refining a bulbous, drooping, or hooked tip.
- Nostril size — correcting flared or overly wide nostrils.
- Nasal asymmetry — straightening a crooked nose.
- Nasofacial angle — adjusting the angle between nose and lip.
- Breathing obstruction — correcting a deviated septum.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Good Candidates
- In good general health with no uncontrolled medical conditions.
- Non-smoker, or willing to stop smoking at least four weeks before and after surgery.
- Facial growth is complete (typically age 16+ for women, 18+ for men).
- Have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.
Not Recommended For
- Patients with active skin infections in the nasal area.
- Individuals with unrealistic expectations for perfection.
- Those seeking surgery due to pressure from others rather than personal motivation.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Open Rhinoplasty
Involves a small incision across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils) in addition to incisions inside the nose. This gives the surgeon direct visibility of the underlying cartilage and bone framework. Preferred when extensive reshaping is required.
Closed Rhinoplasty
All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible external scars. Well-suited for patients who need moderate adjustments, such as a slight reduction in bridge height or minor tip reshaping. Recovery time tends to be slightly shorter.
Septorhinoplasty
When cosmetic reshaping is combined with correction of a deviated septum. This addresses both the appearance of the nose and functional breathing issues in a single operation.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
Builds up the nasal bridge or tip using cartilage grafts or biocompatible implants. Especially popular among patients of Asian or African heritage who desire a higher, more defined bridge.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Corrects unsatisfactory results from a previous nose surgery. Technically more demanding because scar tissue, altered anatomy, and reduced cartilage supply complicate the procedure.
Tip Plasty
A targeted procedure that reshapes only the nasal tip without altering the bridge or nasal bones. Good for patients whose primary concern is a bulbous, wide, or drooping tip.
How It Is Performed
Anaesthesia
Performed under general anaesthesia in most cases, meaning you will be fully asleep and comfortable. For minor tip work, local anaesthesia with sedation may be an option.
Incisions and Reshaping
Depending on the technique, the surgeon accesses the bone and cartilage framework to:
- Remove or reposition bone to narrow the bridge or smooth humps.
- Trim, reshape, or graft cartilage to refine the tip or build up the bridge.
- Adjust soft tissue and skin so it redrapes smoothly.
- Correct the septum if needed for breathing.
Closing and Splinting
Incisions are closed with fine sutures. A lightweight nasal splint is placed on the outside to protect the new shape. Internal splints or soft packing may be placed to stabilise the septum.
Preparation & Logistics
Medical Preparation
- Share full medical history and medication list.
- Stop blood-thinning medications 2 weeks before surgery.
- Quit smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery.

Recovery Timeline
Initial Healing
Swelling and bruising peak around days 2-3. Nasal splint remains for 5-7 days. Sleep elevated and avoid blowing your nose.
Returning to Normal
Splint removed day 5-7. Bruising fades in 10-14 days. Return to desk work in 1-2 weeks. Avoid exercise for 4-6 weeks and heavy sunglasses for 6-8 weeks.
Final Results
80% of swelling resolves in 2-3 months. The nasal tip may take 12-18 months to reach its final refined shape.
Risks and Complications

- Nasal congestion caused by internal swelling.
- Mild numbness at the nasal tip.
- Minor asymmetry during the healing process.
Rare Complications
- Excessive bleeding or infection.
